SAF International Emergency Response
In late August 2025, Punjab witnessed one of the worst floods in recent years. Continuous heavy rainfall combined with sudden water release from Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) led to widespread flooding across the state.
- 1,500+ villages were submerged in water.
- Thousands of acres of farmland were destroyed, causing massive crop loss.
- Over 50,000 families were directly impacted — losing homes, livelihoods, and access to basic necessities.
- In many regions, water levels rose above roof height, forcing families to flee with only the clothes they were wearing.
- Children, the elderly, and sick patients were among the worst affected, with limited access to clean water, food, and medicines.
Most affected areas included:
- Harike Pattan belt (Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Kapurthala)
- Villages in Ludhiana, Moga, and Jalandhar districts
- Several low-lying regions near the Sutlej and Beas rivers
Destruction at a glance:
- Homes washed away or filled with water/mud
- Schools and Gurdwaras turned into temporary shelters
- Livestock loss on a massive scale
- Road connectivity cut off in dozens of villages
SAF International India’s Flood Relief Seva Teams have been on the ground since Day 1 — distributing rations, providing medical care with doctors, rescuing families via boats, and installing relief camps for long-term support
This live timeline highlights our ongoing relief efforts.
August 25, 2025 – Floods Begin
Heavy rains caused widespread flooding across Punjab. SAF International volunteers immediately mobilized, placing sandbags and other barriers to slow the water flow. The situation escalated as Bhakra Beas Management Board. (BBMB) released water into over 1,500 villages, increasing devastation across the region.
August 26, 2025 – Rapid Response
Our teams reached the most affected areas and assessed critical locations for urgent relief work, prioritizing villages with the highest needs.
August 27 – 30, 2025 – Emergency Relief Operations
- Distributed ration kits, groceries, and medical supplies to flood-affected families.
- Organized specialized medical camps staffed by doctors to treat urgent cases.
- Installed medical aid standees near Harike Pattan, providing care to thousands of people.
August 31 – September 2, 2025 – Collaboration and Rescue
- Partnered with NGOs, including Baba Deep Singh Sewa Dal (Garhdiwala), to extend our reach.
- Secured boats to access submerged villages, ensuring that stranded families received food and medical care.
- Continued distribution of ration supplies and medical support to families who lost their homes.
September 3, 2025 – Ongoing Efforts
- Established a public donation collection point near MBD Mall, Ludhiana to engage local support.
- Continued on-the-ground relief efforts in flood-hit areas, providing food, ration kits, and medical aid.
- Volunteer-led seva operations remain active in multiple regions, reaching the most vulnerable families.
Phase 2: Rehabilitation & Preventive Measures (Mid-September 2025)
As floodwaters receded, SAF shifted focus from immediate relief to helping communities recover:
- Food, clothing, and bedding distribution continued for families returning to their homes
- Sanitation repair: Village toilets were unclogged and restored to prevent the spread of disease
- Clean water tankers were deployed to ensure safe drinking water in affected areas
- Fogging operations were carried out to reduce mosquito-borne illnesses and protect public health
- Medical and ration support remained ongoing, reaching families who were still vulnerable or isolated
Phase 3: Rebuilding & Long-Term Support (Ongoing)
SAF’s teams are now focused on helping communities regain stability and rebuild their lives:
- Household essentials: Mattresses, beds, and fridges are being distributed to affected families
- Housing reconstruction: The first flood-damaged home is under construction, with 12 more identified for rebuilding. Teams continue surveying additional families for long-term support
- Community restoration: Kar Seva at local Gurdwaras is underway, including repair of community halls and public facilities
- Children’s education: School supplies are being prepared for over 5,000 children, ensuring they can continue their studies without interruption
- Livelihood support & Agricultural Recovery: To help communities restore flood-affected lands, SAF India, our partner on the ground, is providing farmers with diesel, seeds, and logistical support. Floods deposited large amounts of sand on fertile soil, and each week, around 50 volunteers bring their tractors to clear the land. This work makes fields ready for cultivation again, helping families rebuild their livelihoods and regain stability
- Ongoing monitoring: Teams continue to visit villages, track recovery progress, and provide follow-up support for health, sanitation, housing, and livelihoods
