How Mr. Singh’s anonymous $168,000 gift is changing lives
In today’s world, where every interaction seems monetized, where data mining and publicity-driven acts dominate headlines, genuine acts of selfless generosity can feel rare. However, the story I’m about to share with you will not only restore your faith in humanity but also inspire you to reflect deeply on your own legacy.
Mr. Singh’s Journey from Immigrant to Generous Philanthropist
This story is about Mr. Singh—an extraordinary individual whose humility and dedication embody the true spirit of Sikhi. Mr. Singh immigrated to Canada from Panjab, India, in the early 2000s, leaving behind a comfortable life, his ancestral home, and everything familiar. His journey wasn’t easy; like many immigrants, he began with small jobs, learned new trades, and, driven by a relentless Sikh work ethic, soon established himself in the construction industry.
Through his sheer determination, Mr. Singh grew his modest beginnings into a successful construction business, highly respected for developing numerous high-rise, low-rise, and single-family homes. I first met Mr. Singh around 15 years ago when I was working in the construction sector. We collaborated briefly, but life took us on different paths until fate reconnected us at the Surrey Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan in the summer of 2024.
Project Shelter: Building Homes, Changing Lives
Surprisingly, Mr. Singh had been following my journey through my social media accounts, especially appreciating the transformative path I had chosen by dedicating my life to Panthic Seva through SAF International. After exchanging phone numbers, Mr. Singh invited me to his office, expressing his interest in supporting our organization.
When we finally met again, about five months later, I went into the meeting prepared with a clear proposal. SAF International had been working tirelessly on Project Shelter, a critical initiative that had already constructed 60 homes for underprivileged families in Panjab over the last decade. I proposed Mr. Singh’s company consider supporting another 60 homes over the next three years. Without hesitation, he pledged an astonishing $168,000 CAD donation.
The Power of Anonymous Giving (Guptdaan)
Thinking like most corporate donors, I offered to organize a press conference, present a symbolic oversized cheque, feature his company prominently on our website, and regularly highlight their generosity on social media. Mr. Singh’s response stunned and humbled me.
“No need, Bhai Sahib,” he gently said. “This is a guptdaan—an anonymous donation. My intention isn’t publicity; my intention is purely to serve our people. I trust you and the work of SAF International fully. Please keep my name, photo, and company anonymous.”
His profound humility touched me deeply. Curious, I pressed him a bit, noting that most businesses naturally seek recognition for their generosity. Mr. Singh agreed but explained that a recent extended stay in Panjab had deeply transformed his perspective. “In the West, our minds race constantly. In Panjab, I slowed down and connected closely with our Gurus’ ithaas (history) and their incomparable qurbani (sacrifices). Compared to their immense sacrifice, this donation feels very small. Bhai Sahib, please do Ardaas for me, that I too may soon become an Amritdhari Singh and join the Khalsa family.”
Leaving a Lasting Legacy with SAF International
I went into that meeting expecting one outcome and left deeply inspired by Mr. Singh’s dedication to Sikhi Sidhant (principles). Over my years with SAF International, I’ve met numerous incredible souls, yet Mr. Singh’s humility and generosity uniquely touched my heart.
Mr. Singh is setting a powerful example of legacy building. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren will proudly recount stories of his selfless generosity and the tangible impact he’s made, building homes and changing lives for countless families in Panjab.
Reflecting on Mr. Singh’s generosity, it made me wonder: What legacy are we leaving behind for future generations? How are our actions today shaping the stories that will be told about us tomorrow?
If Mr. Singh’s story inspires you, consider leaving your own meaningful legacy. SAF International provides an accessible and impactful way for you to make a lasting difference. You, too, can establish a Legacy Fund, ensuring your generosity continues to positively impact lives for generations. In a world craving genuine heroes, Mr. Singh stands out as an authentic example of humility, generosity, and deep-rooted faith. Let his story inspire you to make your own mark and leave behind a legacy worth remembering.
