Rediscovering the Forgotten Nepali Sikhs: Hemant Singh’s Journey of Transformation
Hemant Singh, a Nepali-born Sikh who grew up making liquor at home and struggling with alcohol addiction, rediscovered his path to Sikhi after a Gurdwara Sahib was established in his village in 2018.

Despite the love of his family, he found himself ensnared in the vicious cycle of addiction, inflicting pain upon himself and those closest to him.

With determination burning within him, he sought solace and strength in the teachings of Sikhi, finding refuge in the Gurudwara Sahib. Day by day, the weight of addiction began to lift, replaced by a profound sense of purpose and inner peace.
Three years have since passed, marking a remarkable transformation in Hemant’s life. No longer shackled by the chains of addiction, he now stands as a beacon of hope in his community, running his own business and serving others at the Gurudwara Sahib, spreading kindness and positivity wherever he goes.
Hemant’s journey serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless potential for change. It sheds light on the overlooked community of Nepali Sikhs, whose history intertwines with the illustrious reign of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, yet has often been neglected by the broader Sikh Quam.
With the recent establishment of SAF’s Gurmat Kendar in April 2024, there is renewed hope for the Nepali Sikh community, envisioning a future where their contributions and stories are recognized and celebrated. Hemant Singh’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of faith and perseverance, reminding us all that even in the darkest of moments, there exists the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
