Pyari Sangat jee,
As we reflect on the events of four decades ago, our hearts are filled with a mix of sorrow and chardikala. This week, we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib (the holiest shrine of the Sikh faith) and the resilient response by Sikhs. The Indian military aimed to complete their mission of dismantling the Sikhi spirit and Gurdwara sahibs by evening, but the brave Khalsa, the army of Akaalpurkh, valiantly extended the battle for eight days.
It is crucial to recognize that Sikhs did not seek conflict or violence; they were simply defending their holiest place of worship against the army of their own nation—India. This tragic event, known as Operation Blue Star, is deeply etched into our collective memory and continues to shape the identity and spirit of Sikhs around the world.
Sri Harmandir Sahib, often referred to as the Golden Temple, is not just a physical structure; it is the spiritual heart of Sikhi. It stands as a symbol of peace, equality, and the enduring strength of our community. The attack in June 1984 was an assault on these values and on the very core of our faith.
In remembrance of this occasion, we at SAF International stand united with Sikhs globally. We honour the courage and resilience of those who defended the sanctity of our holy shrine and those who lost their lives in the violence that ensued. Their sacrifices are a reminder of the strength inherent in our faith and our unyielding commitment to justice and righteousness.
As we look back, it is essential not only to remember the pain but also to draw inspiration from our rich heritage and the teachings of our Gurus. The events of the attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib have fortified our resolve to stand against oppression and to continue our mission of serving humanity, a core principle of Sikhi. We must remember that we did not allow hatred to take root in our minds and souls against any religion because of this event. Instead, we remain steadfast in our commitment to stand against oppression, wherever it occurs in the world. As the Khalsa of the Akaalpurkh, this is our sacred duty and responsibility.
