Frequently Asked Questions – Volunteering with SAF International
Submit your application for service! Once we receive it, a member of the SAF team will get in touch to discuss how your skills and interests align with current volunteer opportunities.
On average, SAF requires a minimum of six months from the time you apply until your departure. This allows ample time for planning, preparation, and training.
SAF provides detailed guidance once your trip is confirmed, but here are a few key things to get started:
- A valid passportis required, and it must be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.
- Allow 6-8 weeks for immunizationsbefore your trip to ensure they are effective.
- Register your tripwith the Canadian Embassy or U.S. Department of State.
- Learn more about your destination through trusted resources like Lonely Planet.
Prior to your trip, you will receive a Pre-Trip Orientation packet via email and mail. This packet covers everything from cultural insights to trip expectations and logistical planning.
Once you arrive, SAF staff will guide you through cultural acclimatization and help you understand the local community’s processes. Additionally, SAF will support you in processing your experiences after your return, ensuring the lessons learned are integrated into your life.
We welcome inquiries about how your skills align with our needs. Currently, SAF is primarily looking for Educators, Sikhi & Panjabi language teachers, and Camping volunteers with at least two years of experience.
Occasionally, opportunities are available for retired individuals and students on a gap year from university.
